Frequently Asked Questions (and some answers)
Q: How much are movie tickets? Theatre tickets?
A: Tickets are $9.00 for all movies (except Tuesdays are currently discounted at $7.00). Theatre tickets are $38 for adults, $15 for kids under 12. Ticket prices include NC sales tax. We accept cash as well as most major credit cards.
Q: Do you have senior discounts?
A: No. As a non-profit theater, our ticket sales make up only 50% of our operating costs. As such, we do not offer many discounts. Currently the only discounts available are those on summer theatre group ticket sales and two dollars off movie tickets for active duty military - except on Two Dollars Off Tuesdays, when everyone can enjoy a discount on movies.
Q: Can I get a refund for tickets I purchase?
A: Unfortunately, no. Like most other theaters, ALL TICKET SALES ARE FINAL. We understand that emergencies come up, so we will be happy to swap your tickets to a different show time of the SAME production or movie - if seats are still available. Tickets may not be swapped to an entirely different production.
On a related note, ticketing for Patrons is handled slightly differently. If you are a Patron, you do have more flexibility to use your tickets for various shows. (The number of tickets varies with donation level. Please see our Patron information page if you have questions.) Be aware that any Patron Perks that go unused for the current season cannot not be carried over to subsequent seasons. Please be sure to use them prior to our finale on September 3rd, 2017. Thank you.
Q: I have my tickets all printed. So can I cut through the line and go get my seat while others pay?
A: For movies, no. Seating is still on a first-come basis. We need you to come into the Box Office first. For those who pre-purchase and print tickets to our theatre productions, yes - please make your way to your seat. But please have your tickets and the credit card used for your online purchase (*) with you. We will have ushers to help if you have any issues.
*Q: If I paid my money and have my ticket, why should I have further proof?
*A: Because we unfortunately live in a world where people often try to get something for nothing and will fake tickets to do so. -_- By having a credit card number and/or email address matching the purchasing credit card and/or email address, we have a way of verifying tickets in case an issue arises.
MOVIES and THEATRE
Q: Why don't you have live plays year-round?
A: Highlands is a small town and during non-summer months there has historically not been a large enough population to support professional live productions. However, we do now have movies playing year-round.
Q: Why don't you put dates on all of your coming attractions? or Do you have a list of upcoming movies?
A: We would if we could! It would be so nice to plan. Unfortunately that is not the way it works for small theaters. The movie distribution companies release a certain number of copies of any given movie at a time. Typically the larger chains get them first, then the mid-size theaters. If there are any remaining copies available then the small multi-screens are offered the opportunity, then us single screen folks. This means that most often we find out on Monday what we will be showing on Friday. We post our schedule as soon as possible so check back with us often or CLICK HERE sign up to have show times delivered to you via email.
Q: Then how do I find out what will be playing?
A: This website is the best source as we update it as soon as we have the information, or as recently mentioned you can CLICK HERE to sign up for our email newsletter. It goes out once a week with the listings and any news regarding the Playhouse. We also run ads in the local Highlander and Highlands Newspaper. Finally, you can call and access our recorded phone message.
Q: The internet has the wrong show times. What's up with that?
A: There are a lot of websites, such as Google, AOL, Yahoo, Fandango and others who post movie show times and they just aren't always accurate. The BEST way to get our show times is right here on OUR website. If we make a mistake, we'll take responsibility for it but try as we may, we have no control over the other sites.
What is your dress code?
A: If you are over the age of 5, PJs are not a valid wardrobe decision. Normal dress here at the Playhouse is casual for movies and "business casual" to semi-formal for live productions. In short, we don't want to see anything we really shouldn't. Be considerate of others and we shouldn't have any issues.
Q: I'm addicted to my digital device. Can I bring it with me and tweet out every third line of the movie? How about take pics of the actors if I promise to share them with all my friends.
A: Um, No. Don't be THAT guy (or gal). Turn them off, be present, and enjoy the show.
Q: Can I eat in the theater?
A: Yes, we serve snacks. You can drink there, too. We have wine!
Q: Can I bring my own food and drinks?
A: No. We do everything possible to keep our prices are affordable. We are a non-profit business and use the money made at concessions to keep movies and shows coming to Highlands. We are licensed with ABC permits to serve wine, but not beer nor spirits. So please be aware that it is unlawful for you to bring in your own alcohol. If you are caught we will be forced to press charges. It is not worth the risk. Don't do it.
Q: Can I help myself to refills if no one is at the concession counter?
A: No, it's a health code violation. No one wants your germs all over their popcorn. So if no one is standing right there to wait on you, just pop your head into the box office around the corner and we will be happy to help.
Q: What time should I arrive?
A: We recommend arriving 20-30 minutes before show time if you plan to get snacks. We begin selling tickets and seating for a show 40 minutes prior to show time.
Q: Do I need reservations or can I just show up?
A: You don't need reservations, but we recommend them on an opening weekend, around holidays, and for popular movies since some shows sell out. If you want to be sure to get a seat, purchasing your tickets on-line is a good move. You can always call us as well.
Q: How do I get the seat I want?
A: We only assign seats for theatre productions. Your seat assignment is made at the point of purchase. If you are a Playhouse Patron and want your favorite seats each night, please be aware that chances of getting those prized seats diminish as we get closer to the production. Call us or claim your seats online as soon as possible if this is a priority for you.
Movies are open seating - aka, on a first come basis so if it is important to you we recommend arriving early to pick your favorite seat. We begin seating 40 minutes prior to show time.
Q: Can I leave you a voice mail and assume the seats are mine?
A: Please don't. We do everything we can to ensure we hear and promptly handle all voice mails received, but occasionally they do disappear on us. We only accept seat assignments via on-line or telephone so we can verify that we have seats available.
Q: I've been trying to call and get your voice mail. Why don't you answer the phone?
A: Once again, we make every effort to answer the phones, but sometimes it's not possible - especially when we are seating a show. People standing at the counter do not appreciate competing us chatting on the phone when they need assistance. We arrive to open the theater one hour prior to our first show. If you call earlier than that, you may get our voice message service.
Q: I have a group of several people coming to the movie but I'm the first one to arrive. Can I buy my ticket and save their seats?
A: Only If you buy all the tickets for everyone in your party. Otherwise, your party may not be able to sit together since movie seating is first-come basis.
Q: How much does it cost for a private party or meeting?

Q: My friend gets great response from advertising at the cinema. How can I put my business on the big screen?
A: With our attendance now over 10,000 people per year, you should consider taking advantage of the captive audience since many arrive about a half hour prior to the shows. CLICK HERE FOR DETAILS or Send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org and we'll be happy to get you signed up.
Q: How long do my Playhouse Patron Perks last?
A: Any Patron Perks should be used within one year from your date of donation. Live production tickets apply to the next available production season. For example: If you give on 11/15/2016 your Patron Perk tickets will be in the summer of 2017. If you give midway through the season (say July 30th), you may use your Perks entirely in 2017 or the first two shows of 2018, but not after July 30th 2018.
Q: Are gifts to the Highlands Playhouse tax deductible?
A: Yes, and please know we may send a thank you right away, but the IRS-required donor acknowledgment letters are sent once a year in January.
